History

In the Beginning

2010: God whispered “Praying for Pennies” in Beverly's ear. From this great revelation our journey began. We started picking up pennies left on the ground and asking strangers for the pennies in their pockets or purses to ease the pain of families in need.

2011: We saved pennies and helped a woman regain the power, water, and gas in her home.

2013: We saved pennies and helped someone who desperately needed a car.

The Dream comes to Life

Fall 2013: I told our VP, Darlene DeMoss, about my dream in 2010 regarding the vision of “Praying for Pennies.” She listened to my dream that Friday night as we ordered pizzas for the Youth Ministry. While we waited for the pizzas, I showed her what I meant by Praying for Pennies. I approached 3 customers who were also waiting for their takeout orders. I said to them. Is it okay for me to ask them a question? They said yes. I asked them to reach into their pockets and only give me their pennies. As they looked in their pockets or purses for pennies, I explained how, one day, these pennies could feed the poor and shelter the homeless. Darlene and I witnessed customers reaching in their pockets, searching in excitement to bless us with pennies. These customers even went to their cars to collect all the pennies from their ashtray, coin holder, and floor.

July 2014: 25 friends prayed, then collected “Pennies” for two months, July -September 2014. In December 2014, we took the collected pennies of $329.40 and purchased 22 new blankets to give to the homeless in DC.

Fall 2014: I presented the idea of Praying for Pennies to the Director of a Women’s Discipleship ministry at my church. But, I almost gave up on Praying for Pennies after receiving only a few pennies from the Women’s Ministry initial trial period by June 2015.  But God intervened by having a 5-year-old girl and her 8-year-old brother sit near me during my hair appointment. I asked the little girl her name, but she did not reply. I turned to her brother and asked him his age. He replied; then I asked if he would save pennies to help feed the poor and shelter the homeless worldwide. He said, “Yes!” But his 5-year-old sister continued to totally ignore me. The next day, the hairdresser called excitedly about lots of pennies that were thrown under her door. I thanked the 8-year-old boy for the pennies during my next hair appointment. He immediately told me he did not put anything under the door, but his 5-year-old sister did! I asked her why she put the pennies under the door because she would not even talk to me on June 30? She said, “Yes, but I was listening! She told me she saved her pennies and pushed them under the door because I told her brother, “One day, the pennies will feed the hungry and shelter the homeless.”  I thanked God for using this little girl to prove this assignment was from

July 2015: I hosted a crab fest with 55 attendees. We collected $321.77 in pennies. This yearly event marked the beginning of summer donations to the Queen Esther Ministry for needy women.

December 2015: 300 ladies collected $479.55 for “Praying for Pennies” in just 4 short months. This amount was donated to the Youth Ministry at our local church to be used for those in need.

After years of collecting pennies and unofficially serving the community, on January 29, 2020, that one word from God in 2010 birthed a 501©(3)  Nonprofit organization called Praying for Pennies, Inc. Our mission is to open our hands to feed the poor, shelter the homeless, and provide guidance and training to those in need.

“Praying for Pennies” isdetermined to meet it's goal of collecting 1 billion pennies for the needy. Our guiding scripture from the bible is  “Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.”  Proverbs 13: 11

Our dream is to collect ONE BILLION Pennies. We hope you partner with us to make this dream a reality.
